Used Car Buying & Selling Tips

  • Establish the price of your used car. Use guides such as KBB.com or NADA to set a reasonable used car price.
  • Prepare your used car for the sale. Have the used vehicle washed, detailed, and have minor repairs taken care of.
  • Only accept cash or certified checks when selling your car. Taking personal checks for the sale of a car is a bad idea that can lead to unnecessary problems.
  • Get a CarFax report for used cars you are interested in buying. Checking these reports will reduce the risk of buying a lemon or being the victim of fraud.
  • Have the used car inspected by your mechanic. If you're interested in buying a car, it's a good idea to have a mechanic you trust check the car to make sure it is in the condition advertised.
  • Shop around. The used car market is enormous, with a plethora of used car dealers, certified pre-owned inventory, for-sale-by-owner listings, and more. Compare a number of vehicles to make sure you're buying the right car and getting the best deal.
